Peripheral intravenous cannulation

Course Description
- Cannulation is a one day clinical skills course for health professionals who need to develop safe, structured peripheral intravenous cannulation practice.
- The course covers preparation, consent, infection prevention, vein selection, equipment preparation, insertion technique, securing the cannula, flushing, documentation, complications and escalation.
- Learners complete six hours of taught training followed by a supervised practice portfolio.
- One day duration.

Suitability
- Registered health professionals and clinical staff whose role requires peripheral intravenous cannulation.
- Non-registered clinical support staff where cannulation is included within their job role, employer policy, supervision arrangements and local clinical governance.

Compliance & Alignment
- This course is aligned with the Skills for Health National Occupational Standard SFHCHS22: Perform intravenous cannulation.
- For CQC registered providers, the course can support evidence of staff training, supervision and competence relevant to safe care and treatment, staffing and local clinical governance.
- Completion of the taught course does not authorise independent cannulation practice. Learners require appropriate workplace supervision, portfolio completion and local sign off before practising independently.

Entry requirements
- Learners should work in a health or clinical role where peripheral intravenous cannulation is relevant to their duties.
- The employer should confirm that learners are permitted to undertake cannulation training and that appropriate supervision is available for post course portfolio completion.

Delivery & venue
- Training is delivered at the client’s location.
- Maximum 6 learners per tutor.
- The course is delivered using practical skills teaching, scenario based training and structured discussion relevant to the client’s clinical or care environment.

Assessment & Certification
- Learners are assessed throughout the course through practical skills, participation and scenario based assessment and an MCQ.
- A supervised practice portfolio is completed after the course in the learner’s clinical workplace, in line with local governance and employer requirements.

Tutor standards
Courses are delivered by HCPC registered paramedics with:
- At least ten years in clinical practice
- At least five years in a specialist clinical role.
- A paramedic degree
- A postgraduate qualification
- An approved teaching qualification
- Full membership of the Royal College of Paramedics
