Course Description
- Immediate Life Support is a practical course for health professionals who may need to respond to a deteriorating patient or adult cardiac arrest before advanced help arrives. The course develops a structured approach to assessment, early recognition, high quality CPR, defibrillation, simple airway support, team working and safe escalation.
- One day duration.

Suitability
- Doctors, nurses, nursing associates, dental professionals, allied health professionals, healthcare assistants, clinical support staff and other health and care professionals who may be expected to respond to clinical deterioration or adult cardiac arrest.
- Clinical and care settings where staff require a higher level of emergency response training than basic life support alone.

Core Content
- Recognition of the deteriorating patient
- ABCDE assessment
- Causes and prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest
- Recognition of adult cardiac arrest
- High quality CPR
- Safe defibrillation using an AED or manual defibrillator.
- Simple airway manoeuvres and airway support
- Oxygen use, where appropriate to role and setting
- Reversible causes of cardiac arrest
- Team roles during resuscitation
- Communication, leadership and followership
- Structured escalation and handover
- Practical cardiac arrest scenarios

Compliance & Alignment
- Aligned with Resuscitation Council UK Immediate Life Support guidance and current UK adult resuscitation practice, including recognition of deterioration, ABCDE assessment, high quality CPR, defibrillation, simple airway support, reversible causes, team roles, escalation and handover.

Delivery & venue
- Training is delivered at the client’s location.
- Maximum 6 learners per tutor.
- The course is delivered using practical skills teaching, scenario based training and structured discussion relevant to the client’s clinical or care environment.

Entry requirements
- Learners should be health or care professionals, or staff working in a clinical or care role where they may need to respond to deterioration or cardiac arrest.
- Learners should already have basic life support knowledge and should be able to take part in practical training, including CPR and scenario based assessment. Reasonable adjustments can be discussed before the course.

Assessment & Certification
- Learners are assessed throughout the course through practical skills, participation and scenario based assessment and an MCQ.
- Certification is provided electronically.

Tutor standards
Courses are delivered by HCPC registered paramedics with:
- At least ten years in clinical practice
- At least five years in a specialist clinical role.
- A paramedic degree
- A postgraduate qualification
- An approved teaching qualification
- Full membership of the Royal College of Paramedics
