Course Description
- Venepuncture is a one day clinical skills course for staff who need to take venous blood samples as part of their role.
- The taught course is six hours and is followed by a supervised practice portfolio. Teaching focuses on safe preparation, patient communication, infection prevention, blood collection technique, sample handling, documentation and escalation.
- One day duration.

Suitability
- This course is suitable for staff working in health or care settings where venepuncture is part of their current or planned role.
- It may be suitable for staff in GP practices, clinics, occupational health, community services, private healthcare, care settings and other services where blood sampling is undertaken under local governance.

Compliance & Alignment
- This course is aligned with the Skills for Health National Occupational Standard SFHCHS132: Obtain venous blood samples.
- For CQC registered providers, the course can support evidence of staff training, supervision and competence relevant to safe care and treatment, staffing and local clinical governance.
- Completion of the taught course does not authorise independent venepuncture practice. Learners require appropriate workplace supervision, portfolio completion and local sign off before practising independently.

Delivery & venue
- Training is delivered at the client’s location.
- Maximum 6 learners per tutor.
- The course is delivered using practical skills teaching, scenario based training and structured discussion relevant to the client’s clinical or care environment.

Entry requirements
- Learners should work in a health, care or clinical role where venepuncture is relevant to their duties.
- The employer should confirm that learners are permitted to undertake Venepuncture training and that appropriate supervision is available for post course portfolio completion.

Assessment & Certification
- Learners are assessed throughout the course through practical skills, participation and scenario based assessment and an MCQ.
- A supervised practice portfolio is completed after the course in the learner’s clinical workplace, in line with local governance and employer requirements.

Tutor standards
Courses are delivered by HCPC registered paramedics with:
- At least ten years in clinical practice
- At least five years in a specialist clinical role.
- A paramedic degree
- A postgraduate qualification
- An approved teaching qualification
- Full membership of the Royal College of Paramedics
